  E-Mails & Communication

With e-mail now the preferred method of communication it is important to maintain a current listing of addresses. In an effort to update our address book we are encouraging you to contact us using your e-mail address. As we have done in past seasons we will select one (1) e-mail address from our address book and offer them a FREE TRIP (#1 Fly-Out Special) for one person. The deadline for submission off e-mail addresses will be May 1, 2009. Please note that we DO NOT sell or give our customer list to any other entity!

Margaret Lake/Allison Lake

Just a real quick note to let all of our readers know that Margaret Lake and Allison Lake are no longer fly-out lake options – they have been transferred to another outfitter in the area. We determined both lakes were better suited to the operational uses of the other outfitter and, as a consequence, worked through an arrangement that was mutually beneficial and satisfying to both parties.

HAPPY NEW YEARS’

  #4 Confederation Lake Special

This is a “new package” offering at the main base on Confederation Lake. The package will include 4 days/nights at the main base of KaBeeLo Lodge, all meals and lodging, boat, motor, gas and all the trout and northern pike fishing an angler could want. (Extra days are available at $140/day).

Goods & Services Tax (GST) Rebates

Canada imposes a 5% GST on all trip packages offered by KaBeeLo Lodge.  A non-resident is entitled to a partial rebate of this tax provided a deposit has been paid prior to the trip onset.  For those that meet these requirements, KaBeeLo Lodge will rebate a portion of these taxes on site rather than requiring our guest to apply for this rebate.  This is another small effort on our part to make your trip to KaBeeLo Lodge as “hassle-free” as possible.

BIG FISH

Can you believe a 47.5” northern pike? How about a 29”walleye? These were some of the largest fish caught and released on our lakes during the 2008 fishing season. The Peterson “team” from Minnesota caught & released the largest northern in 2008 while again this year “lots” of fishermen caught & released walleyes in the 29” class. We would like to THANK each of these anglers for reporting their extra-ordinary big catches. We would also like to THANK them, and all of you, for support of the lodge policy on trophy fish – let’em go and let’em grow. 2008 at KaBeeLo Lodge was another GREAT FISHING SEASON.

Minor Criminality

Canada and the United States look at the world differently especially in the area of criminality. One example - driving while intoxicated (i.e., DUI or DWI). In Canada it is a felony while in the USA it is a misdemeanor and, accordingly, different penalties apply. Should your background include a DUI or DWI you will want to determine your admissibility prior to your trip. Websites to visit for clarification or information about admissibility would include: www.cbsa.gc.ca or www.CanadaWelcomesYou.net

REMEMBER: this is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and, as such, your deposits are not refundable if you are not admitted to Canada.

Destination Marketing Fees

With the 2008 season several lodges and allied businesses began collection of a 1% destination marketing fee (DMF) for the purposes of promoting NW Ontario as a world-class destination. For the 2009 season this DMF will be 2% and will apply to a “fixed” portion of the package price. In most cases this will amount to approximately $10/person. For more information regarding the DMF please take time to visit www.nwontdestinations.com

2009 Pricing

We recognize that 2008 was a tough economic year for all of us, especially fuel costs. While things have not changed all that much as this newsletter is being written (bonus – fuel prices have dropped in the USA but not significantly in Canada) KaBeeLo Lodge has held a very tight line on price increases. We will do our very best to see that everyone wanting to fish at KaBeeLo Lodge in the 2009 season will be able to do so. Keep us posted and we promise to keep each of you posted.

  GETTING TO KABEELO

From International Falls, MN cross the border into Canada and go East on Hwy 11 for 20 miles; north on Hwy 502 to Dryden; West on Hwy 17 to Hwy 105; North on Hwy 105 to Ear Falls. Take Hwy 657 (Goldpines Road) east and then follow the signs to KaBeeLo. REMEMBER: Follow the power line north on the South Bay Road for 36 miles (57 kilometers) to KaBeeLo. Since the small signs on the roadside are in kilometers you will want to travel just past kilometer 57 to KaBeeLo Lodge.

New Additions to the Lohn Family

We are the VERY, VERY PROUD grandparents of a new grandson (Winston Lars Lohn – parents Allysson & Erik Lohn) and VERY, VERY PROUD grandparents-to-be for our daughter, Kristin, and her husband, Erik, are expecting a child in Spring 2009. For those of you that are grandparents you know the feeling of joy and exhilaration. For future grandparents – what a true blessing it will be.

  Bait? Live vs. artificial

Bait selection is a matter of personal preference. However, when looking at the options, the angler must consider cost, availability, performance & durability of the different bait types. Past performance indicates that live minnows are the premier bait on our fly-out lakes with night crawlers and leeches in second place with artificial baits pulling up the rear. Nevertheless, artificial baits are less costly, quite durable and more readily available and, on any given day can out perform live bait. With the new, scented power baits (e.g., GULP, YUM, GORP, etc.) we are finding that a combination of price plus results is becoming hard to beat. Try some and let us know the results.
